Update! Analyzing A Chicken Bone

So what happened? The bone that was in the water container smelled awful, retained its color and was still hard. The one in the vinegar container was odorless and the bone was softer. What is so special about vinegar that it can make a hard bone soft? Vinegar is considered a mild acid, but it is strong enough to dissolve away the calcium in the bone. Once the calcium is dissolved, there is nothing to keep the bone hard - all that is left is the soft bone tissue. That is why it is very important to include calcium in your diet.

The boys working on circumference, diameter and radius of a circle for robotics.

The Double Helix

Without DNA, we wouldn't be here. It controls all of our physical characteristics, including eye color, hair color, and even the taste buds on our tongues. In this lesson, we studied the structure of DNA by building a 3-dimensional model which they ate afterwards!
  • Do you know what DNA stands for? It stands for DeoxyriboNucleic Acid.

Closet Makers Lab

During the summer I collected lots of material for our STEAM (Science Technology Engineering Art Mathematics) elective class. I wanted to have a dedicated area for the boys to utilize the material. We live in a townhouse without a basement so I had to think outside of the box. I decided to convert a spare hallway closet into our makers lab. Now they have a place to be creative and everything is in arms reach.

I purchased clear containers to keep the activities separated and organized.

How do you encourage creativity in your home?
